Sydney

Sydney est la ville la plus peuplée d'Australie avec une aire urbaine comprenant en 2008 une population de 4 340 000 habitants répartis sur près de 12 150 km². Elle est la capitale de l'État de Nouvelle-Galles du Sud et est située sur la côte sud-est du pays.

Première des colonies européennes d'Australie, Sydney fut fondée en 1788 à Sydney Cove (l'emplacement actuel de Circular Quay) par le capitaine Arthur Phillip qui commandait la première flotte venant d'Angleterre. Construite sur les deux cotés de la baie de Port Jackson, Sydney est aujourd'hui le plus important centre financier d'Australie, ainsi qu'une destination touristique internationale, connue pour ses plages et ses deux monuments principaux : l'Opéra et le Harbour Bridge.

Sydney est une cité établie autour d'une baie qui peut accueillir 10 000 bateaux.

L'endroit où les premiers immigrants britanniques débarquèrent en janvier 1788 reste toujours le centre ville : "Downtown".
