Waterford

La ville de Waterford est la capitale du comté de Waterford en Irlande. C'est la principale ville de la région sud-est, et la cinquième du pays. Fondée en 914 par les Vikings, c'est la plus ancienne cité de l'île.

C'est également la seule grande ville à avoir gardé un nom dérivé du norrois : Vedrarfjord, c'est-à-dire le « fjord venteux », ou le « port sur la mer balayée par le vent ».

Selon le recensement de 2006, la population de l'agglomération de Waterford est de 49 213 habitants, dont 45 748 dans les limites de la ville et 3 465 dans sa banlieue.

La ville est bâtie sur la rive sud du fleuve Suir, qui a permis le développement de son activité maritime ; son port est l'un des plus important d'Irlande depuis près de mille ans. Au XIXe siècle, la principale activité économique de Waterford était la construction navale ; vers 1850 la famille Malcomson, propriétaire du chantier Neptune Shipyard, possédait également la plus importante flotte de navire en acier au monde, dont cinq transatlantiques.

Waterford est aujourd'hui célèbre pour son cristal mondialement connu ; ses cristalleries produisent depuis 1783.
