Sulina is a town and free port in Romania, at the mouth of the Sulina branch of the Danube. It is the easternmost point of Romania.
Its name is probably derived from Slavic word for "salt", sol with suffix -ina.
Once a prosperous port and important shipyard, from 1856 to 1939 the seat of the Danube Commission, Sulina has become a disadvantaged location, with an estimated 40% rate of unemployment in 2004, approximately seven times higher than the Romanian average.
The reason is that the town has no road access, the only way to reach it is by boat that leaves Tulcea and crosses all the Sulina branch. This keeps the tourists wanting a quiet vacation at the seaside at low numbers. Also for a Danube Delta vacation it seems to most unlikely place to choose since the Sulina branch has lost it natural aspect due to being transformed in a navigable channel for commercial ships. Sfântu Gheorghe branch is the tourists favorite place for this kind of vacations, plus the advantage that Sfântu Gheorghe town ( with a similar positioning on the sea side ) has made a reputation for the film festival held each year in the summer time. |
