Montijo is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 348.0 km² and a total population of 40,199 inhabitants. The town itself has a population of 25,719.
The municipality is composed of 8 parishes (Portuguese, "freguesias"), and is located in the district of Setúbal. It's one of the few municipalities in Portugal without territorial continuity (Portuguese:municipios territorialmente descontinuos) (the other being Aveiro, Oliveira de Frades and Vila Real de Santo António): its territory comprehends two parts, with the city of Montijo located in the smaller, more densely populated part. Of the territorailmente descontinous municipalities in Portugal, Montijo is the most obvious. It is located in GAM de Lisboa (Lisbon Greater Mteropolitan Area)
The present Mayor is Maria Amélia Macedo Antunes (Socialist) and the President of the Municipal Assembly is António Isidro Paracana (Socialist).
Singer Dulce Pontes was born in Montijo, which was a town and became a city in the 1980's, a decade when several localities were elevated to the city status(Portuguese:cidade)by the Portuguese Republic. The Montijo municipal holiday is June 29. The Vasco da Gama Bridge connects Montijo to Sacavem and Lisbon (Ponte Vasco da Gama) over the huge Tagus river estuary, often known as("Mar da Palha" {Straw Sea}. |
