Næstved is an important commercial town in a municipality of the same name on the island of Zealand in Denmark. Næstved is located one hour travel time from Copenhagen. In 2003, the Guard Hussars regiment moved from Næstved to Slagelse. Næstved has a population of 41,717 (1st January 2009). Næstved's UN/LOCODE is DKNVD.
Næstved has some adult education centers, five elementary schools and has at least one of each type of the four upper second level education centers. The city has the largest high school in Denmark, Næstved Gymnasium & HF.
In January 2008, the City Council presented the plans for a new urban area in the Stenlænge-area of the town (119 acres), including 1000-1500 residential homes, along with a new stadium, hotel, school, sports facilities and more. The council intends to establish Næstved's position as the leading city on Zealand after Copenhagen, when it comes to cultural facilities and family life. The project brings to life a dream of having the facilities to attract the best performers from domestic and abroad, and gives Næstved the ability to compete with other cities of its own size, as well as Copenhagen, when it comes to concerts and shows.
