Die Republik der Marshallinseln ist ein Inselstaat im westlichen Pazifischen Ozean. Der Staat umfasst die gleichnamige Inselgruppe, die zu Mikronesien gehört.

Die Marshallinseln bestehen aus zwei fast parallel verlaufenden Insel- beziehungsweise Atollketten: Die Ratak-Kette im Osten wie die Ralik-Kette im Westen bestehen aus zahlreichen Atollen und wenigen (isolierten) Inseln.

Zu den Inselketten gehören zusammen über 1.150 größere und kleinere Inseln, die sich über ein Gebiet von 1.900.000 km² im mittleren Pazifik erstrecken.

Das Klima ist feucht und heiß mit einer Regenzeit von Mai bis November. Die Inseln werden gelegentlich von Taifunen erfasst.

Zwei Drittel der Bevölkerung leben auf den Inseln des Majuro-Atolls und auf Ebeye. Die anderen Inseln sind wegen fehlender Arbeits- und Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten nur dünn besiedelt oder unbewohnt.

Hauptstadt ist die Gemeinde Majuro im Südosten des gleichnamigen Atolls.
