Bratislava ist die Hauptstadt der Slowakei und mit rund 427.000 Einwohnern die größte Stadt des Landes. Im äußersten Südwesten des Landes am Dreiländereck mit Österreich und Ungarn gelegen, ist sie die einzige Hauptstadt der Welt, die unmittelbar an zwei Staaten grenzt.

Als politisches, kulturelles und wirtschaftliches Zentrum des Landes ist Bratislava Regierungssitz der Slowakei sowie Standort mehrerer Universitäten, Museen, Theater und weiterer wirtschaftlicher, kultureller und wissenschaftlicher Institutionen.

Die Geschichte der Stadt wurde von zahlreichen Ethnien geprägt, wie Kelten, Römern, Awaren, Deutschen, Magyaren, Juden und Slowaken. Bratislava war im Laufe seiner Geschichte eines der wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen und administrativen Zentren Großmährens, des Königreichs Ungarn (auch im Rahmen der Österreichischen Monarchie bzw. Österreich-Ungarns) und der Tschechoslowakei. Es war 1536–1783/1848 Hauptstadt des Königreichs Ungarn sowie 1939–1945 Hauptstadt der Slowakei. 1968 wurde Bratislava Hauptstadt des Teilstaates Slowakische Sozialistische Republik (slow.: SSR) in der Tschechoslowakischen Sozialistischen Republik (ČSSR), kurz (1990-1992) Tschechischen und Slowakischen Föderalen Republik (ČSFR). Seit 1993 ist sie Hauptstadt des selbstständigen Staates Slowakei.
