Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur ist eine Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh mit 624.570 Einwohnern.

Gorakhpur liegt am Rapti direkt an der Grenze zu Nepal. Sie ist Verwaltungssitz des gleichnamigen Distrikts und der gleichnamigen Division. Ihr Name leitet sich von Gorakhnath ab, dem Begründer der religiösen Gruppe der Nath Pantha (siehe Hinduistische Orden), dem in der Stadt ein Tempel geweiht ist.

Die Wirtschaft der Stadt lebt großteils von der Zucker- und Düngemittelindustrie. In Gorakhpur ist eine Universität ansässig. Die Stadt ist die Heimstätte der Gita Press, die zu staatlich subventionierten Preisen hinduistische Schriften publiziert.
